Turmeric gives the fabric a rich, rich warm ocher color. So you can dye a summer scarf, T-shirt, bedspread, pareo, summer skirt and so on.

Turmeric is a wonderful natural dye. Turmeric is worth dyeing natural fabrics: cotton, linen. By staining, you can completely change the color of the fabric, and hide not too obvious spots, especially yellowness, sometimes appearing on the material from long storage. But if the spots are too noticeable, it is better to try to remove them with a stain remover before staining. If you are painting a summer scarf, skirt, T-shirt or bedspread, you can add patterns using the Tai Dai technique. Read more about Tai Dai in this selection of workshops.

You will need:

- thing or material for coloring;

- turmeric powder (about ½ cup);

- vinegar;

- a large capacity for coloring, which can be put on fire;

- rubber or plastic gloves;

- device for mixing;

- if you plan to make a drawing in the technique of tai-dai - elastic bands or rope.

4 natural ways to keep fabric color

Step 1

Wash your thing or material - do it if they are new and if they were in use. Pour water into the tank by adding vinegar to it (about a glass for 4 liters of water).Submerge the material in water with vinegar, set on fire, bring the water to a boil and boil for at least 30 minutes. This process will allow the dye to fix better subsequently. Then rinse the material well in cool water to remove residual vinegar.

Step 2

Rinse the container and refill it with water, pouring so much that it can cover the whole thing to be painted. Bring water to a boil and add turmeric powder. It uses about ½ cup of powder - you can put less or more if you want a less or more saturated color. Boil turmeric water over low heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 3

If you want to make patterns in the technique of tai-dai, bandage the thing / fabric / material.

Step 4

Immerse the item or cloth in turmeric water and continue to boil for another 15 minutes, stirring occasionally so that everything is saturated evenly. Then turn off the fire, cover the container with a lid and leave for several hours, sometimes checking if the color saturation is sufficient. To change the color of this white knitted scarf, it was insisted after boiling for 24 hours.

When the item or fabric removed from the container becomes about 2 shades darker than what you need, remove it from the container and rinse well in cool water until the water becomes clear. If you were dressing a cloth, remove the elastic bands or cords and rinse well again. It remains to dry the fabric - done!
