Solid Markers
Inextricable markers, as the name implies, do not open.They are used for knitting and are used to highlight, for example, loops of a pattern or loops of a part that fits simultaneously with the whole thing (say, the portion of the thumb on mittens). Such markers are put on a spoke, so they should slide well on it and be conveniently carried from one spoke to another. One-piece markers can be simple - for example, in the shape of a circle or a triangle, or resembling a pendant or a keychain - jewelry on such markers is worn on a loop, usually made of wire. Laconic markers often turn out to be more convenient - they are made of special materials that give good glide and less interfere with work, especially if they are made of flexible plastic.

Detachable Markers
Markers of this type can be used when crocheting, and knitting: they are not worn on a tool, but on knitting loops. Detachable markers are also diverse: there are in the form of a closing loop, in the form of a snake, a lock with a latch, there are markers similar to safety pins of different sizes, only made not of metal, but of colored plastic. Strongly lockable markers are more functional - they can be used both as detachable and as one-piece.

Handy Markers
Custom-made markers are a relatively recent invention that makes knitting easier.For the same purpose, our grandmothers usually used a thread of contrasting color, skipping or tying it between loops and rows to mark the right places. True, the thread is quite simple to accidentally pull out, and the tag will be lost, moreover, such a marker is almost not felt by touch. But a thin thread is the only type of label that does not need to be removed before wet-heat treatment of the item (ironing and steaming).
Another improvised option - using a paper clip as a marker - is not always convenient: the tip of the paper clip clings to knitting and can make a puff. But paper clips as markers have their advantages: firstly, they are inexpensive and always at hand; secondly, they come in different sizes and colors, this is convenient for knitting needles of different thicknesses and for tags for different purposes in one thing.
As a detachable lockable marker, you can use ordinary metal safety pins, clothes pins, key rings, snap hooks and large clasps for jewelry. Most often, the convenience of a device is determined in the process of working with certain threads and tools.
